Phoenica to Fishkill

We started back at the Phoenicia diner.  Lots of coffee and salmon scrambled eggs for me.  Huevos rancheros for Jeff and Bugs. We'd read from a cycling expert that if you had a large breakfast you needed to wait at least 2 hours before getting on a bike. Given our time constraints we just got going : we weren't trying to break any time records that day.  The manager there was very helpful and gave us some tips and contacts in the area, he wished us "Bon Voyage" and filled our bidons with some very eggy, sulphury water. Poo.

Now wait 2 hours...(who's looking after the bikes?)

The route was more familiar to me as I know this part of New York state. We rode down route 28, swung right and then crossed the beautiful Ashokan reservoir, which provides NYC with it's drinking water. We rode through Stone Ridge and High Falls before hitting Mohonk mountain. The climb isn't particularly long but it is particularly steep.  At the top of the mountain we rode past the well manicured golf course of Mohonk mountain house. In my tired state I thought I saw Bugs coolly teeing off on the 1st, but it was a pile of leaves.  In New Paltz we rested up with the elite athletes repast of hotdogs and fries.

The Kosiners have the coffee/donut/hotdog/fry thing sown up in this town

The road out of New Paltz turns into the Dutchess rail trail.  The lack of traffic, the hypnotic sound of the wheels on the leaves, and Jeff's gentle wheezing lulled me in the afternoon heat. The 20-mile paved track led us over the Hudson river on a pedestrian walkway. The peace was broken as we left the trail and suddenly we were surrounded by Friday afternoon traffic rushing around Fishkill.

We hugged the side of the road, stuck between impatient commuters and perilously close wild roadside weeds encroaching onto the verge. I made a mental note to email blast the local roadside management about their vegetation control.  Our hotel had been advertised as having a hot tub and pool. Naturally - post labor day- this was all closed. We made up for it at dinner. We seriously over-ordered in a great bar/restaurant called "The Hop", they take the brussel sprout-bacon thing and turn it on it's head. More bacon than sprout. Love it. A demain.
